Location

Villa Atlantica is located in the western Algarve, in the small village of Salema which offers a small selection of local restaurants and shops. The lovely beach is a backed by the sandstone cliffs and rock formations, so typical of the Algarve.

A short drive away is the larger seaside village of Luz, a popular destination with families and couples alike because of its splendid sandy beach, well known for its good water sports, including windsurfing, boating, waterskiing and diving. The village retains a traditional Portuguese charm with its winding cobbled streets and quaint white-washed houses, which blend easily with the demands of modern tourism. There is an array of interesting restaurants in the village along with two good beach bars. Further west is Sagres, which is the most south-westerly point in Europe, and the place where Portuguese explorers set forth to navigate the globe.

The nearest large town is Lagos – a historic maritime city which has links with Henry the Navigator. The pedestrianised main streets are lined with restaurants and open-air cafes and the main square is a great place for people watching, and taking advantage of the street entertainment on offer. Lagos’ importance during the Age of Discovery finds the streets steeped in history, and it is also the site of the earliest slave market in Europe. Historic sites include the governor’s castle and the church of St Sebastian. The modern marina is the launching point for popular ‘dolphin watching’ tours and in the evenings offers dining options and live music bars.
